The Imperative: Innovation Inventory

I was going through my email and I found a link to an article that was sent to me… it’s a great article: The Imperative: Innovation Inventory. It talks all about how companies must innovate or die. Reading this article, I couldn’t help but think of how many companies I have talked to who have said, “We’re fine, everything is working as it always has, we don’t need to change things up.”

Here’s a snippet:

In today’s tough times, companies may feel like they have a choice: focus on innovation or survival. It is a false choice. Innovation has gone from a nicety to a corporate necessity. After all, remember what legendary trial lawyer Clarence Darrow — clearly channeling Charles Darwin — said: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but rather the one most adaptable to change.”

It’s tough to get started unless there’s a common understanding of the challenge. As such, the first item on the Seizing the Silver Lining Checklist is: Does your organization recognize today’s transformation imperative?

In today’s hyper-competitive world, competitive advantage that takes years to build disappears seemingly overnight. Constant change is the new normal. Companies can’t win through operational excellence alone. They have to master the ability to fundamentally transform what they do and how they do it.

Cold Calling Wars!

There have been times in my life where I have been a  cold calling MONSTER!  But I can tell you I have never experienced anything like this:

Phone rage leads to arrest here for Ohio man

By Matthew Hathaway
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
07/21/2009

An Ohio man, fed up with deceptive junk mail, made the mistake of losing his temper while on the phone with a St. Louis company pitching an extended auto-service contract. Now he finds himself behind bars, where he is charged with making a terrorist threat.

According to court documents, Charles W. Papenfus, 43, allegedly told a sales representative during a May 18 telephone call that he would burn down the building and kill the employees and their families. He was indicted for making a terrorist threat, a Class D felony; and he could be sentenced to up to four years in prison if convicted.

SMPS

I went to the SMPS Principal Forum this morning. What a great event! I am so happy I attended. The forum was all about BIM and the legal aspects surrounding it. I discovered a new word while I was there: FEDERATED MODEL. Basically federated models are separate and distinct models that can be seen together. What a great way to describe the Architectural, Structural, and MEP models within Revit! Additionally, a book was mentioned that was written by Stephen Kieran from KieranTimberlake. I didn’t catch the title but I am thinking it was: Refabricating Architecture: How Manufacturing Methodologies are Poised to Transform Building Construction. The book was highly recommended so I will have to pick up a copy!

SMPS is having a Holiday Party next week. The great thing about it is it benefits the Ronald McDonald House. I just bought tickets and I hope to see you there!

Power of BIM

When people talk about BIM do you smile and nod and hope they don’t ask you to define it? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Many people THINK they understand BIM and even more pretend to understand it. So what is a person to do? I wouldn’t waste any more time… do a little research, you can start here: Autodesk’s Power of BIM. Once you understand the methodology you can start adding to the conversation and you can even throw out words like parametric and bi-directional associativity! How cool is that? 🙂

SMPS Event

The Society for Marketing Professionals is having an event all about the legal ramifications of BIM. This looks like a great event. So many of my clients are concerned with who owns the model and how BIM affects risk and responsibility.

Here’s the info on the event:
